Oscillations in an Adaptive Aircraft Control System

An analog simulation of an adaptive control system showed small amplitude limit cycles when large input command signals were applied. These were explained by perturbation analysis on simplified versions of the systems. The conclusions were verified by the analog computation. The oscillations were shown to be an inherent feature resulting from the servo and actuator lags and the integrations in the gain-changing mechanization. A modification was made which eliminated the limit cycles.
