We statistically analyze the actual ship motion steered by the AR autopilot system developed by the authors in 1977. The analysis is based on a multivariate AR modeling of time series observed at the experiments. The course keeping qualities and the control laws are compared with the conventional PID autopilot system. Various possible extensions of the AR autopilot to adaptive ones are also discussed.
